The view from my window this morning on the ferry to Vancouver Island & our next destination, Victoria.
Travel days can be lost days, mostly spent packing, moving the suitcases from from spot to another and then unpacking. For me, travel days feel more substantial, more of an actual holiday day, if you’re traveling under your own steam. If you’re in a car, as we are today, & you don’t have the stress of trying to make connections for planes or coaches you have more options. Mind you I never have to do the actual driving so MGM may not concur.
Being very conscious of rule #2, we launched off in our hire car (newly arranged to be bigger bc the first one we booked would not fit all our luggage) with MGM white knuckling it RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD, we got to the car ferry to Vancouver Island on time. This is what the boat we were on looked like
Safely loaded on board, we headed upstairs to get our seats to watch the scenery while we enjoyed some, I must say DElicious coffee, and pastries. Seated right behind us were two lovely crocheters. Anywhere in the world there’s an instant crocheter camaraderie and so we got to talking. It turned out that one lady was learning and the other was a very reluctant teacher. I offered a few tips and then tried to tear myself away but maaaan it was hard. In fact, I had to go out in the deck to stop from butting in.
Out on deck was cool and so refreshingly breezy after the hot days in Stamps Landing it was a real pleasure to watch the scenery glide by and imagine what it would be like to live in one of the little homes perched right on the water’s edge or tucked up high, nestled in the spiky pines.
When I returned to my seat the learning lady was on her own - ‘I thought you’d never come back in! Can you show me again please?’ And so the rest of the trip was an extremely pleasant crochet lesson and cultural exchange. These serendipitous holiday happenings are a real joy, things for the ‘remember when …’ stories that make our lives rich.
Off the boat again we journeyed to Victoria, via the unnecessary scenic route (thanks sat nav) and the chosen scenic route (thanks Tony) visiting Sidney (yes that’s how it’s spelt) a quaint little seaside town for lunch.
And now we are here in yet another delightfully quirky hotel above a pub - I’m picking up a theme here.
