two trains, a bus, and two cars: Zülpich to Frankfurt to Rothenburg

The view from my window this morning ...

Germany speeding past as we say to Rob & Liz, auf weidersehen (which is nicer than goodbye because according to Wikipedia it literally means "until we see again")

Rob took us in the car to Zülpich train station

and put us on the correct train, with LOTS of instructions
(notice my "it's-too-early-in-the-morning-for-a-photo face")

and we managed to exit this train at the right station - Cologne - to change for a train to Frankfurt.

Where, after some backwards and forwardsing (the platforms are at least a kilometre long), we found our first-class cabin (squeals)

... and then we went very fast (300kms p/h) to Frankfurt - where we got off ... at the correct place! We were very chuffed with ourselves but it was actually because Rob was so thorough with the 'do this/don't do this' instructions.

At Frankfurt Airport we caught the bus from T1 to T2 (Frankfurt airport is huge!)

Next step was to locate the hire car desk to meet up with my sister-in-law and her husband, (Wendy and Tony).

And here's where the day didn't go quite to plan. Tony's sat nav (affectionately named 'stupid cow') had a little fun and took them to Frankfurt airport, from Eckwersheim (NW France) via Luxembourg. This was the 100k-longer-than-necessary 'scenic' route. You can see their thoughts on this on The Bests Abroad

Soon we were on the road to Rothenberg, remembering AllansAbroad rule no. 1: don't bump into anything.

Where we arrived in enough time to have a well-earned wine.

and still have time for a walk around the famed medieval walls

before sunset

and sunset didn't stop the intrepid AllansBestsAbroad with the sightseeing

 or the shopping

It was a long day, sad to say goodbye to Rob and Liz but very happy to be reunited with family. The theme of this holiday for us is friends and family but that doesn't stop me missing my friends and family at home - love you all so much.
