Day 8 Stockholm

the view from my window this morning

on the agenda today

Yes yes I know BORing …I work in a library and I visit libraries on my holidays … have pity for poor MGM. I understand this is my head but it doesn’t stop my heart from yearning towards libraries.

Libraries: where the world makes sense to me, where beautiful things are stored in beautiful surroundings and anyone can partake of the beauty for free. Not to mention the power that resides within...don't get me started.

Stockholm University Library
And surprisingly there’s a statue of a Kangaroo out the front! ...why?
We couldn’t work out why, even with our personal tour guides – Monica & Evan (you're right Global Geek they are extremely handy). They explained logistics like where you can/cannot park, made the pay/display parking ticket machine actually give us a ticket, took us places we wouldn't have found on our own & told us interesting things about what we were seeing).

It appears that Uni libraries don’t differ all that much, or perhaps my experience is just limited.

They have self-serve hold shelves

information desks

stacks, group study rooms,

study carrels (although not all have such a view)

The next library was Stockholm City library.

Let’s get this clear…I want to work, or perhaps even LIVE here. This is a beautiful building with a gorgeous reading room ...

Evan and MGM found husband seats

  every nook has a purpose

staircases are often spiral

At this point some of us needed a breather so we had cake-lunch & a little bit of shopping (MGM actually wanted to shop, that’s how desperate he was poor love). I accomodated I him by swapping one passion for another, I went yarn shopping – now if I can only get time enough to get my crochet hook out and stay awake long enough to do some crocheting (this being a tourist thing is exhausting).

He tried to distract me with beautiful churches.

rule #1 always look up

But I was not to be denied, so we went right back to libraries. The National Library of Sweden is in Stockholm. Any national library is a must...right?!

My book-loving friends (or anyone who knows me at all) will understand that there was a fair bit of internal squealing and some quiet dancing done as I explored these libraries but I must give a mention to the many spiral staircases that took me on those adventures to the upper levels, they added an extra dimension to my delirious joy.
