Day 7 Skansen

Sweden turned on some sun this morning so we headed in to the beautiful city of Stockholm. In the 20 mins it took to drive there things  went back to over-cast, as you can see, but the sun did play peepo with us all day and as Monica says, it was perfect weather for sightseeing.

Below is the view of the city from City Hall

the Nobel Peace prize is awarded here

Below is the City Hall where there was a free concert today so there was a lot of tourists joining us. One of the perks of traveling in winter is not sharing the sights with other greedy eyes so it was a strange feeling to be part of a crowd. We planned to see the concert but in the couple of hours before it was due to start we opted to see Skansen.

We were at Skansen for a most magical snowy NYE in 2010 but we didn't see any of the park which is a huge open air musem and zoo - think Old Sydney Town with authentic attractions. All the buildings are actual historical artifacts that have been removed from their original location and reconstructed in Skansen, to create a museum. So I got to see how my Great Grandfather and ancesotrs lived.

I love that the interiors are authentic, heating accorfing to the time, no electric lighting so as the day wore on we got a feel for what it would be like to live in times when you had to go to bed at 4:30pm because it was too dark inside to do anything. Allan cherubs please note the decorations on this tree include apples.

a school room that was part of the teacher's house.

most of the interiors had multi-lingual guides who were in costume and very imformative.

This church was Built in Gothenburg in 1729

the interior was amazing and agin authentic - no electric lighting etc.

and a bonus for us was a free concert! So we didn't get back to the concert hall but this was better I think...Motzart, Schubert, Nessun Dorma and

something i didn't know on this amazing organ

we walked around this very special park for 3-4 hours it was a wonderful day.

we saw some of the animals in the zoo as well but I'll show you them tomrrow. kisses my cherubs.

  1. Oh what a beautiful day! I love the school room, but don't think I'd like to be teaching school IN my house. It's bad enough that students know where I live, let alone be inside.

  2. I think I remember reading that the red-timber church in Skansen is the most popular in the country for weddings. Loved wandering around Skansen, although it looks so much prettier with layer of snow!
