Wish I’d written that line but thanks Cat Stevens,
for describing our day so eloquently. We had to say farewell to Grundlsee
today, always a sad occasion but made even harder by the fluffy snow falling in
abundance from the heavens this morning.
The view from the window and on the way to the car
We spent the rest of the day driving through the colourless
white of the winter world. For my part I’m trying to soak up as much of the
cold & white as possible while I can.
We had our first hiccup of the holiday at the end of our journey when we arrived in Gemünd. The hotel said ‘no room for you’. The reception desk was supposed to be open till 6pm, so we were surprised to find that they’d all gone home to their nice warm homes by 5:55PM. Fancy that – someone closing 5 mins early ;) Ordinarily they’d leave a key in a dropbox but I think someone was keen to get home because – no key. This is something of a problem after a long drive, when it’s dark and snowing and you don’t know the area at all.
Luckily we have our trusty car with sat nav so we
didn’t get too lost finding a B&B for the night, although the first 89 we
tried had severe “go-away” looks to them. When we did find one that was
slightly more welcoming it was right near an Indian restaurant, handy for
hungry travelers. We used the point & shoot method for choosing our
meals off the all-German menu. We lucked out in that we both chose something
good, although MGM did break out in a sweat whilst he was hastily ordering a
second drink (after the second mouthful of his meal).
The B&B was a most satisfactory find although
not at all evidenced by the façade, and despite the lack of wifi – hence my 24 silence.
