Day 23

Oberstaufen

Remember when I said it’s good to have friends? Well we’re truly blessed because we have an embarrassment of riches. Two of our favourites suggested a few places to go while we’re here in Oberstaufen, and just as an aside if not for these special friends we wouldn’t be here at all!

Jeff and Naomi took us on our first trip overseas (over a decade ago) showed us how to travel and opened the world up for us as they opened our eyes to just how wonderful God’s creation can be. And we saw some of his best handiwork today.

We slipped across the border into Austria in search of a little Gasthaus that Jeff and Naomi said would be worth the trip and, as always, they were right on the money! We were also going in search of the white stuff and the place we were aiming for, Damüls, is in the record books for the most annual snowfall world-wide. If you drive through Damüls, and keep going till you run out of road this is what you see…

and if you turn left…

We sat on the Gasthaus veranda looking at this magnificent vista eating apple strudel  and sipping gluvine (warm wine drink – very sweet). The strudel was yummy but the gluvine was different from Monica’s gluvine which I liked much, much more (in Sweden you add sultanas and nuts and eat them with a tiny spoon del-ic-i-ous).DSC_0025

It really does your soul good to just sit quietly in the midst of such beauty. When we arrived there were quite a few people all sitting quietly along the narrow veranda, it just seems appropriate to be quiet. One lady was actually reading the paper, must have been a local, MGM said she was probably thinking bloody Alps … Again. When they left, it was just us. All we could hear was the river flowing at the bottom of the ravine and a few birds, glorious.

We stopped along the way for photos which I’ve added in the album but I wanted to put this one in on its own because just  how often do you see a man taking his donkey out for a walk?

  1. My goodness that is a lot of snow! What an amazing view. I'm so glad you're collating all these must see spots, will come in handy for me later, I'm thinking.
