The view from my window today
Yes this is actually the view from our cabin.
While it is a sea day, which for those who didn’t pack multiple crafts or don’t enjoy bingo/booze/large numbers of people, might be a bit slow/boring … not THIS sea day. Because the star attraction of this sea day was glorious Hubbard Glacier.
At breakfast we started to notice land out the window and realised we were journeying down Disenchantment Bay.
We scoffed our brekki, donned our scarves mittens (tshirts were just a bit too Aussie) and headed outside to watch as the bay narrowed to reveal …
The captain turned the boat this way and that to give all sides of the ship a view. The sun came out periodically to change the colour of the water, which in itself was pretty amazing, and we just watched in awe as we slowly crept closer to this monolithic ice wall. We’re looking at 400 year old ice here.
And then we realised that our suite is aft. As aft as can be! So, being at the back of the boat when exiting the Bay would line us up for some prime ice viewing from the comfort of our deck … such luxury.
This is a day I will never forget & for which I will be forever grateful. I’ve had quite a few of those days this trip. I suppose every holiday you’ve worked for, saved for, planned, dreamed and strived for has days like today; but that does not lesson the sense of joy & privilege I feel.
Much as I did not feel I could eat another delicious meal … I did manage it for lunch (& dinner) and joy of joys my old friend the tuna melt was on the menu. Which I combined with my new friend - a Shirley Temple (which we call a fire engine at home).
And as if today has not had enough joyousness in it there was also rum baba! Now I should say that desserts have been few and far for me this trip. Canada and I just don’t see eye to eye about desserts but here … on this ship … I have arrived at dessert nirvana. All the gishy cake I could ask for. I could feel my Mum hovering around me approving delightedly at this rum baba. We used to treat ourselves to them with good coffee whenever we could, and so I did today with a nod to her.
In the early evening we have canopies delivered to our room - how posh is this. We have a selection we can choose from but we’ve narrowed it down to the lobster pancakes being our faves. And yes I did eat them in bed snuggled under the doona, we have the door open to make it cold enough to need the doona.
I’m back in the silent room now writing to you my darlings, while MGM is gallivanting around out there listening to all the live music. I did try and join him, winced my way through one song and excused myself after the bangy head-pounding drum solo which followed the scretchy teeth-grinding guitar solo. What can I say, 80s music was never my thing.
All in all today was amazing and I am grateful for every single minute (except maybe the drums and the guitar bits).
